A two-wheel tractor: one machine, many jobs
A two-wheel tractor (also called a walk-behind tractor) is a power unit you combine with implements: a rotary tiller, plough, ridger, potato digger, mower, sweeper or trailer. It earns its keep on allotments, vegetable gardens, orchards and small farms where a full-size tractor cannot get in or would not pay off. This category brings together petrol and diesel models from WEIMA, RURIS, Jansen, Loncin and Grünwelt, from a light 3.5 hp tiller up to 16–18 hp machines with a power take-off.
How to choose a two-wheel tractor
- Power and weight vs. soil. For light soil that is worked every year in a home garden, a 6.5–7 hp engine and 60–80 kg are enough. For heavy clay, turf and ploughing, go for 9 hp or more and over 100 kg: a heavier machine bounces less and keeps a straighter furrow.
- Working width. Narrow tillers (420–800 mm) fit between beds and trees. Wide tine sets of 1100–1350 mm, and up to 1650 mm on the WEIMA WM1100BE-6, cover open ground faster.
- Belt drive or gear reducer. A belt drive (e.g. WEIMA WM500, WM900M-3, Grünwelt GW-MH85) is simple and protects the engine from overload. A gear transmission with reducer (WEIMA WM1000N and the WM1100 series) copes better with long hours and heavy implements.
- PTO (power take-off). If you plan to run a rotary mower, flail mulcher, sweeper or snow blower from the tractor, choose a model with PTO: WEIMA WM1000N-6 and WM1100, Grünwelt GW-MH130C and GW-MH130F, or Jansen MGT-600.
- Differential. It makes turning a heavy machine at the end of a row much easier. It is fitted to WEIMA WM1100 versions marked “Dyferencjał”, the RURIS C977 and the Jansen MGT-600, where you engage the lock when traction is poor.
- Starting. Most models have a recoil starter. An electric starter is fitted to the WEIMA WM1100FE-6 and WM1100BE-6, RURIS 918K, C977 and 1001KSD, and both Jansen MGT-600 models.
Petrol or diesel
A petrol engine is lighter, cheaper to buy and starts more easily on a cold morning, so it is enough for seasonal garden work. A diesel pulls harder at low revs and uses less fuel over long working days, which pays off with regular ploughing and trailer work. We compare both in the guide petrol or diesel for a two-wheel tractor.

Implements and ready-made sets
Implements are listed under two-wheel tractor accessories. If you are starting from scratch, a set is the easier route: WEIMA WM500, WM900M-3, WM1000N-6, WM1100FE-6 and WM1100BE-6 come in sets with plough, ridger, potato digger and steel wheels, and the RURIS 913ACC, 915ACC and 918ACC with plough, wheels and wheel weights. Before buying a separate implement, check whether it mounts on the hitch or runs from the PTO, and whether your model is on its compatibility list.
Before the first start
WEIMA, Loncin, Grünwelt and Jansen tractors are shipped without engine and gear oil. Before starting the engine, fill both with the amounts given in the manual and check the levels. Oil kits matched to each WEIMA model are available, and for selected WEIMA models you can order assembly with oil filling. Jansen machines arrive in a crate, partly disassembled: you assemble them yourself and top up the oil, including the air filter, before the first start.

Frequently asked questions
Which two-wheel tractor suits a home vegetable garden?
Usually a light 6.5–7 hp petrol model with belt drive is enough, for example the WEIMA WM500 (500–800 mm width, 60 kg, recommended by the maker for plots up to 40 ares), Loncin LC750 or Grünwelt GW-MH85. For narrow beds there is the WEIMA WM450 with 3.5 hp and a 420 mm tiller.
What is a PTO and do I need one?
The power take-off drives active implements: rotary mower, flail mulcher, sweeper, snow blower or rotary plough. If you will only plough, ridge and pull a trailer, a tractor without PTO will do.
Do implements from one brand fit another?
Not always. Jansen J-series implements fit the Jansen MGT-600 and Cedrus, BCS, Grillo and Pasquali machines with the same coupling type. For other brands, check the axle and hub diameter (the WEIMA WM1100 series, for example, has a 32 mm axle) and the hitch type.
Does the tractor arrive ready to work?
No. It has to be assembled according to the manual and filled with oil. For selected WEIMA models you can add assembly with oil filling; Jansen machines are assembled by the buyer.
