For home use, splitting logs up to 50 cm, the horizontal Jansen HS-12L53 (12 tons, 6.5 HP engine) from around 1488 zł is a good fit. For thicker or longer logs (up to 62-110 cm), go for 20-22 ton models like the Jansen HS-20H110.

How much does a log splitter cost?

Petrol or electric — which to choose?

A petrol version (6.5-10 HP) works well where there's no power access, e.g. in a forest or an off-grid plot. Electric models (e.g. Jansen HS-12L53E or TS-22E 5kW) are quieter, cheaper to run and more convenient for garage or backyard use, but need a power connection.

What's the difference between a horizontal and vertical splitter?

A horizontal splitter (e.g. Jansen HS-12L53) suits shorter logs up to about 60 cm and lower working height. A vertical one (e.g. Jansen HS-20H110, up to 110 cm) lets you split longer, heavier logs without lifting them — the log stands straight on the base. There are also 2-in-1 horizontal/vertical models, like the HS-22A62.

Are there dual-direction splitters, and what does that mean?

Yes, models like the Jansen HS-20DS63 or HS-20DS55pro are dual-direction (20/17-ton force) — the log is split from both sides at once as the wedge moves in and out, shortening the work cycle and speeding up splitting larger volumes of wood.
