A replacement petrol engine can save a two-wheel tractor, tiller, plate compactor, chipper, water pump or generator when the rest of the machine is still sound. This section lists four-stroke Loncin, WEIMA and Grünwelt engines from 3.6 HP (149 cc) to 35 HP (999 cc), single and twin cylinder, with horizontal or vertical shafts.

How to choose a petrol engine
- Horizontal or vertical shaft. Two-wheel tractors, tillers, pumps and generators normally use a horizontal shaft. Models marked 1P or 2P (e.g. LC1P75F, LC2P82FD, GW-1P70FA) have a vertical shaft, as on lawn mowers.
- Shaft diameter and type. 19.05 mm (3/4 in), 20 mm, 22.2 mm, 25 mm, 25.4 mm (1 in) or 36.5 mm. "-T" versions have a splined shaft, the rest a plain keyed shaft. Measure with a caliper rather than guessing.
- Power. Choose the same power as the original engine or slightly more. Light two-wheel tractors and tillers usually have 6.5–7 HP, heavy ones 13–18 HP.
- 2:1 reduction. The WEIMA WM170F-L, WM190FE-L, WM192FE-L, Grünwelt GW460E-L and Loncin H500FD-D have a gear that roughly halves shaft speed (about 1800 rpm). Fit them only where the machine had a reduction from the factory.
- Starting and charging. An E or D in the name usually means an electric starter. The Loncin G420FD, G420FD/C7, H500FD, H500FD/C, H500FD-D and LC192FD7 have 7A battery charging, and one WEIMA WM192FE version has a 20A coil. Twin-cylinder engines are electric start only.
Engines for compactors
The Loncin LC165F-3H (149 cc, 3.6 HP) and LC168F-2H (196 cc, 6.5 HP) are built for plate compactors, rammers and tampers. According to the product pages they have no fuel tank of their own, and the crankcase holds 0.6 litres of oil. The LC165F-3H has a low-oil sensor.

What to watch when swapping
- Check and top up crankcase oil before the first start (from 0.5 litres in the smallest to 2.4 litres in the largest engines; the exact figure is on the product page).
- Reuse the old pulley or clutch only if the shaft diameter is identical. Matching 19 and 20 mm pulleys are in engine spare parts.

Frequently asked questions
Which engine for a tiller or light two-wheel tractor?
Usually 6.5–7 HP with a 19.05 or 20 mm horizontal shaft, such as the Loncin LC170F-2, WEIMA WM170F or Grünwelt GW170F. Match the shaft to the old engine.
What is the difference between a 25 mm and a 25.4 mm shaft?
They are two different sizes (25.4 mm is 1 inch). A pulley or clutch for one will not seat properly on the other, so measure before you buy.
Will a 2:1 reduction engine fit any machine?
No. The gear lowers shaft speed to about 1800 rpm, so it only goes on machines that had a reduction from the factory.
What is 7A charging for?
The charging coil tops up the battery while the engine runs, which is useful on machines with an electric starter and lights.
