Jansen tractor wood chippers – PTO disc chippers

An agricultural wood chipper is built for regular processing of large volumes of branches: after orchard pruning, woodland maintenance, clearing a forest plot or park work. Jansen BX and JX disc chippers mount on the three-point hitch and are driven by the tractor's power take-off, so there is no separate engine to service. The exception is the GTS-5000H with a Honda engine, which works independently of a tractor. Lighter garden chippers are in the main wood chippers category.

How to match a chipper to your tractor

• Tractor power: every model has a minimum below which the flywheel loses speed in thick wood. The BX-42S and BX-42RS need about 25–30 HP, the BX-62RS from 30 HP, the BX-92RS from 50 HP, the JX-72RS from 55 HP and the JX-102RS from 70 HP.
• Branch diameter: from 10 cm on the BX-42 series to about 25 cm on the BX-92RS. Judge by fresh, woody branches, as the figures are given for those.
• Feed: the BX-42S is hand-fed. RS models have two hydraulic feed rollers powered by the tractor hydraulics (from about 10 l/min). The rollers can be stopped, reversed and run at variable speed, so thick branches go in slower and thin ones faster.
• Hitch: the BX-42 fits Cat. I, the BX-62RS and BX-92RS Cat. I and II, and the JX series Cat. II. All run at 540 rpm and come with a PTO shaft.
• Weight: from about 175 kg (BX-42S) to about 920 kg (JX-102RS). Match a heavy machine to the lift capacity of your tractor.

On BX and JX chippers a set of 4 blades and a counter blade on a heavy flywheel does the cutting. The BX-42S PTO shaft has a shear bolt that protects the machine if it jams, so it can also be used with a more powerful tractor. The category also includes the Jansen FMB-180 hydraulic hedge cutter bar (180 cm wide, up to 15 l/min, 140–180 bar). It is sold as the bar with hydraulic motor only, without mount or hoses. Other cutter bars and tractor mowers are under flail mowers.

What to watch when working

Disc chippers handle woody branches and shrubs best. Very soft or fibrous material such as thuja, spruce, fir or willow, as well as leaves and grass, can clog the discharge, as the manufacturer warns. Before work check blade sharpness and bolt tightness, connect the PTO with the tractor engine off and raise revs only once the machine is positioned. Never put your hands in the hopper; push short pieces in with the next branch. Machines arrive in a crate or on a pallet, partly disassembled, for self-assembly; check oil and lubrication before starting.
