An engine with an electric starter fires up at the push of a button or turn of a key, and the recoil starter stays as a backup. It is a practical upgrade for two-wheel tractors, garden tractors, chippers and generators, where pulling the cord of a big engine is a chore. This page lists 17 single-cylinder engines of 16–20 hp from Loncin, WEIMA and Grünwelt, all with recoil and electric start. For the full choice of petrol engines see petrol engines.
What you need for electric start to work
- A battery – the electric starter needs a charged battery. Ask us before buying what is included.
- Charging – models marked 7 A (H500FD, LC192FD7, G420FD/C7 and others) have a coil that charges the battery while running, and the G420FD has 12 V 7 A (85 W) charging. The WM192FE with start button has a 20 A coil.
- Wiring and a button or ignition switch – the machine needs the cables and a switch; if it has none, the engine must be matched to your wiring.

All are single-cylinder, four-stroke, air-cooled OHV engines.

How to choose
16, 18 or 20 hp
16 hp (G420FD, WM190FE, GW420E) is the most common choice for two-wheel tractors and mid-size chippers. 18 hp (LC192FD, WM192FE, GW460E) gives reserve for continuous work. 20 hp (H500FD) has the largest displacement (499 cc), but also the highest weight, 40–44 kg.
25 or 25.4 mm shaft
The 0.4 mm difference decides whether a hub or clutch fits. The "/C" versions have a 25.4 mm (1 inch) shaft, the rest 25 mm. Measure the shaft of your old engine before buying.
2:1 reduction
The H500FD-D, WM190FE-L, WM192FE-L and GW460E-L have a 2:1 reduction gear: the output shaft turns at half speed with more torque. They suit machines that need slow, strong drive.
Example use
The Loncin G420FD engine drives the Jansen GTS-1500E chipper, which has recoil and electric start. Read about the brands on the Loncin and WEIMA pages.
Frequently asked questions
Will an electric start engine run without a battery?

How does the Loncin G420FD/C differ from the G420FD/C7?
Power and displacement are the same (16 hp, 420 cc, 25.4 mm shaft). The C7 version also has 7 A battery charging.
Which engine for a two-wheel tractor?
Start with the power and shaft of the old engine. Details are in the guide petrol or diesel; if in doubt, call +48 780 140 444.
