A stump grinder turns a tree stump and its roots into chips right in the ground, with no digging, grubbing out or heavy machinery. What remains is a shallow hole filled with soil and wood chips that you can top up and reseed. This section offers the Jansen BSF-15pro petrol stump grinder, the successor to the BSF-13.
What to look for when choosing
- Engine power: hardwood and large stumps need power in reserve. The BSF-15pro has a 15 HP Loncin G420F engine with 420 cc.
- Grinding depth: lets you remove the stump below ground level. The BSF-15pro grinds down to 500 mm, depending on the working angle.
- Machine width: decides whether it gets through your gate. The BSF-15pro is 790 mm wide, but measure the passage before transport.
- Teeth: tungsten carbide teeth replaced one at a time are cheaper to maintain than a whole new cutter wheel.
- Safety: deadman switch, parking brake and automatic low-oil shut-off.

How to use a stump grinder
You swing the cutter head across the stump on its swivel joint and remove the wood layer by layer until you reach the depth you want. Before you start, clear stones and soil from around the stump, as they wear the teeth faster and can be thrown out. Wear goggles or a face shield and ear protection, and keep other people well away. The removable drawbar with a ball hitch makes it easier to move the machine, but it does not make it road-legal.
Branches from the same tree can go through a wood chipper, and the trunk can be split for firewood with a log splitter.

How deep does the BSF-15pro remove a stump?
Down to about 50 cm below the surface, depending on the approach angle and access to the stump.
How is the machine delivered?
In a wooden crate, partly disassembled. Assembling it yourself takes about 2 hours. Before the first start, add about 1.5 litres of 10W40 or 15W40 oil. The manual is in German.
Can I replace the teeth myself?
Yes, each of the 8 teeth is replaced separately, so you never need to buy a whole new head because of wear.
Will it fit through a garden gate?
The machine is 79 cm wide, so it gets through many standard garden gates. Measure the passage before buying.
