You choose a tracked mini dumper by three things: how much and what you carry, what terrain you cross, and how the load should be tipped. For up to about 500 kg on a plot, in a garden or in the woods, the Jansen RD-300 is usually enough. For 750 kg with manual tipping, the Weima WM7B-750 fits. For heavy loads and gradients, a hydrostatic transmission is better, for example in the RD-600. Inside buildings and stables, the electric MSK-800X works well.

What is a tracked mini dumper for?

For carrying sand, soil, gravel, stones, rubble, firewood and loose materials where a wheelbarrow is too small and a trailer or tractor cannot get in. Tracks cope well with mud, sand and slopes. "Forest" in searches such as "forest carrier" means here a small carrier for work on a plot and in the woods, not a large forwarder for hauling logs.

How to choose a mini dumper: criteria

1. Payload on flat ground and on a slope

The stated payload applies to flat ground. On a slope it drops. An example from the RD-200 and RD-300 pages: 500 kg on the flat, up to 450 kg at a 10° (17%) incline and up to 375 kg at 17° (30%). The RD-800 carries about 425 kg at a 30% incline, the RD-600 about 375 kg. If you work on a hillside, calculate with the slope value, not the number in the name.

2. Drive: petrol or electric

A petrol engine gives long work in the field without charging. An electric one is quiet and emission-free, so it suits buildings, stables, greenhouses and gardens. The MSK-800X runs 6–8 hours per charge, depending on use.

3. Transmission

A geared 3 + 1 transmission (RD-200, WM7B-750) is simple. The RD-300 and RD-800 have 6 forward and 2 reverse gears. A hydrostatic transmission (RD-500, RD-600, RD-1000) gives smooth speed control, and the manufacturer also notes the ability to start off under full load. It is more convenient for frequent manoeuvring and slopes.

4. Tipping method

The Weima has manual tipping (up to 50° or 60°). The Jansen RD has hydraulic tipping beyond 90°, which makes unloading easier. The "pro" versions have a high tip up to 142 cm and load straight into a container or trailer, but the centre of gravity sits higher, so take care on slopes. The "S" versions have a hydraulic self-loading bucket. The RD-1000 tips in three directions.

5. Width and ground clearance

Measure the gate and the narrowest passage. According to the product pages, the width is about 71 cm (RD-300pro), 75 cm (RD-200, RD-300), 81 cm (RD-600) and 88 cm (RD-800). Ground clearance is 90 to 170 mm depending on the model.

For the RD-200, RD-300, RD-300S and RD-500, a snow blade, a stake frame and a flat body with side boards are available separately, among other things. You will find other machines in the construction carriers and carriers and dumpers sections.

Common mistakes when buying

  • Counting payload as on flat ground. On a slope the load capacity drops by a quarter or more.
  • A "pro" version for steep ramps. The higher centre of gravity calls for care, as the manufacturer warns.
  • A passage that is too narrow. Check the width of the machine, not only the payload.
  • An electric model for a full day in the field. Range depends on the batteries (for example 6–8 hours for the MSK-800X).
  • Skipping oil before start-up. Check the engine and hydraulic oil before the first start.

Delivery and first start-up

Jansen carriers arrive well packed on a wooden pallet, and you prepare them for the first start yourself: about 45 minutes for the RD-200 and RD-300pro, about 30 minutes for the RD-500. Before the first start, check and if necessary top up the HLP46 hydraulic oil (about 10 l in the RD-500) and the engine oil (about 1 l, 10W40 or 15W40). On receipt, check that the shipment is complete.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a mini dumper carry on a slope?
For the RD-200 and RD-300: 500 kg on the flat, up to 450 kg at 10° and up to 375 kg at 17°. For the RD-800 about 425 kg at a 30% incline.

Petrol or electric mini dumper?
Petrol for longer work in the field, electric (MSK-500, MSK-800X) for quiet, emission-free work in buildings and gardens.

Is a tracked carrier suitable for the woods?
Yes, as a small carrier for a plot and woodland, for example for firewood and branches. Tracks cope with mud and sand, but this is not a machine for hauling large logs.

What does a hydrostatic transmission give?
Smooth speed control and starting under full load. The RD-500, RD-600 and RD-1000 have it.
