A grass mulcher is a walk-behind flail mower with its own petrol engine and wheel drive. It cuts tall grass, weeds, saplings and small shrubs, shreds the cuttings straight away and leaves them on the ground as mulch. It works well in orchards, along field margins, on fallow land and on overgrown plots where an ordinary lawn mower clogs up.
How to choose a grass mulcher
- Cutting width: 45–60 cm for narrow rows between trees and smaller plots, 70 cm for larger open areas.
- Engine power: 7 HP is enough for grass and weeds; 9–11 HP gives reserve in dense brush and wet grass.
- Gearbox: a reverse gear makes work along fences and in corners much easier; three forward gears let you match speed to how dense the growth is.
- Starting: the electric-start version (e.g. GWX700E) is more convenient if you start the machine often.
- Weight: a heavier machine (around 180 kg) holds the ground better, a lighter one is easier to transport.

The models with Y-blades (Grünwelt, WEIMA, Jansen HSM-60) shred the material finely. The Jansen HGM-58 cuts with four blades on a disc and throws the cuttings to the side, so it suits mowing along fences and on slopes of up to about 35%. Tractor-mounted mulchers are in the flail mowers category.
Frequently asked questions
How is a mulcher different from a normal mower?
A shaft with flail blades shreds grass and woody stems instead of leaving clippings to rake up. It copes with growth that makes a rotary mower clog.
Which model for an orchard?
Between tree rows a narrower mulcher is handy, for example the Grünwelt GWX460 or Jansen HSM-60. In wider rows a 70 cm model works faster.
Does Jansen arrive ready to use?
Jansen machines are delivered in a crate, partly disassembled, for self-assembly. Check and top up the engine oil before the first start.
