Wood chippers and shredders – garden and tractor models

A wood chipper (garden shredder) turns branches from pruning trees, shrubs and hedges into wood chips. Instead of burning or hauling away the waste, you get mulch for beds, material for compost or fuel. This category holds every chipper in the shop: WEIMA and Grünwelt petrol models for gardens and orchards, Jansen GTS shredders with their own engine and Jansen BX and JX disc chippers driven by the tractor PTO. How to choose a wood chipper

• Maximum branch diameter: the key figure. Choose it with a margin over what you actually cut. Manufacturers quote it for fresh, straight wood; dry, hard branches go through less easily.
• Drive: a 7 HP petrol engine handles 5–6 cm branches, 14–18 HP 9–12 cm, and the 22 HP Honda-powered model up to about 15 cm. PTO chippers use the tractor's power and process thicker wood.
• Feed: on smaller machines the cutting unit pulls the branches in. Hydraulic feed rollers (BX-42RS, BX-62RS, BX-92RS, JX, GTS-5000H) draw material in by themselves, with adjustable speed and direction.
• Transport: models with a towbar (WEIMA WMS305, WMS306, Grünwelt GW-S312E) can be towed around the property. Three-point chippers are carried by the tractor.
• Starting: electric start (GW-S312E, GTS-1000pro, GTS-1500E, GTS-2000pro, GTS-3000pro, GTS-5000H) makes frequent starts easier.

Use and common mistakes

The most common mistake is feeding branches that are too thick or very dry and forcing them in. The machine bogs down and the blades dull faster. Leaves, grass and soft, fibrous material (thuja, willow, spruce) can clog disc chippers, so the manufacturer recommends mainly woody branches. Dull blades show as ragged chips and resistance when feeding: replace them in pairs to keep the balance. Blade sets for WEIMA WMS301, WMS305, WMS306 and Jansen GTS-1500E, and blade drums for the WMS301, are available. Wear goggles, gloves and ear protection.

Jansen chippers arrive in a crate, partly disassembled, for self-assembly. Before the first start add engine oil and, on hydraulic models, hydraulic oil.

Frequently asked questions

Which chipper for a home garden?
For prunings from fruit trees and hedges the WEIMA WMS101 or WMS304 (up to 5–6 cm) is enough. For thicker branches choose a 10–12 cm model.

Drum or disc chipper, what is the difference?
In a drum chipper the blades sit on a rotating drum that pulls branches in. In a disc chipper they are mounted on a heavy flywheel, which with PTO drive cuts thicker wood.

What tractor for a PTO chipper?
The BX-42S and BX-42RS need about 25–30 HP, the BX-62RS from 30 HP, the BX-92RS from 50 HP, the JX-72RS from 55 HP and the JX-102RS from 70 HP. All run at 540 rpm.
