A flail mower (flail mulcher) has a horizontal shaft with heavy hammer flails that cuts and immediately shreds grass, weeds, scrub and thin branches. The cuttings stay on the ground as fine mulch, so there is nothing to collect. This category covers Jansen machines for tractors (PTO or hydraulic drive), for quads and ATVs with their own engine, for excavator arms, plus boom mowers and hedge cutter bars.
How to choose a flail mower
- Tractor power: this is the first filter. The light EFG-105 and EFG-125 already work with tractors from about 15 HP, the wide EFGC and EFGCH units from 50 HP, while the heavy AGF-220 and AGF-240 slope mowers need at least 90 HP.
- Working width: should match or slightly exceed the tractor's track so you do not drive over the cut strip. Compact garden tractors usually take 105–145 cm, farm tractors 175–240 cm.
- Hitch and PTO: most models fit a Cat. I or II three-point hitch and run at 540 rpm. A PTO shaft is included. The AG-220 has a 1000 rpm gearbox and mounts front or rear.
- Side shift: the EFGCH series, VMA-240 and AG-220 shift hydraulically left and right, which helps along ditches, fences and trees. A double-acting hydraulic outlet on the tractor is needed. The AGF has shift and tilt, so it needs two outlets.
- No PTO: the AT-120 and AT-145 have their own petrol engine and tow from a ball hitch behind a quad, ATV, ride-on or 4x4. The BMM-130 is a front mower with its own engine for older tractors without loader hydraulics.

Use and common mistakes
Before mowing, walk the area and remove stones, wire and thick branches: the flails spin fast and can throw them. Set the cutting height with the roller or skids so the blades do not dig into the soil. In dense growth start at lower revs and a slow pace. A tractor that is too weak or driving too fast overloads the gearbox and belts. After the season check belt tension, flail play and the oil in the bevel gearbox.
Jansen machines arrive in a crate, partly disassembled, for self-assembly. Before the first start check and top up the gearbox oil and, on models with an engine, the engine oil.
Frequently asked questions
Which flail mower for a small tractor?
For about 15–25 HP the EFG-105 and EFG-125 fit. From 30 HP consider the EFGC-175 or EFGCH-155.
What is the difference between EFGC and EFGCH?
Both have a lifting hood for easier blade changes. The EFGCH adds hydraulic side shift, which needs a double-acting outlet on the tractor.
Can I mow with a quad?
Yes, the AT-120 and AT-145 have their own engine and electric start and hook up via a ball hitch. No PTO is needed.
Which mulcher for an excavator?
The BM-120 suits 6–8 t excavators with 60–100 l/min oil flow and cuts scrub and branches up to about 3–4 cm.
