A hydraulic log splitter splits firewood with a force of a dozen to several dozen tonnes, with no axe work. This category holds all Jansen log splitters: horizontal and vertical, single- and double-acting, with petrol engines, electric 230 V and 400 V, driven by a tractor PTO or tractor hydraulics, plus cone splitters for mini excavators. Accessories sit alongside: log lifter, work tables and a winch.
How to choose a log splitter
- Splitting force: 12 tonnes is enough for dry hardwood of moderate diameter. 20–22 tonnes is a safe choice for thicker, knotty rounds. 30–40 tonnes pays off with large volumes of hard, irregular wood.
- Log length: horizontal splitters take rounds up to 50–62 cm, the usual size for stoves and fireplaces. Vertical units with 110 cm capacity split metre-long logs straight from the forest.
- Drive: a petrol engine makes you independent of mains power; electric is quiet and convenient near the house. A 400 V motor needs a three-phase socket, 230 V a standard one. "K" models have both drives. The TS series runs from the tractor PTO or its hydraulics.
- Horizontal or vertical: on a horizontal splitter you lay the log on the beam; on a vertical one you stand it on the base and do not have to lift heavy pieces. The HS-22A62 works in both positions.
- Double-acting: the HS-20DS63 and HS-20DS55pro split on the forward stroke (20 t) and on the return (17 t), so there is no idle return.

The vertical TS splitters are heavy (about 300–400 kg) and sit on the three-point hitch, so the tractor carries them around the yard. The PTO shaft is not included. The TSW-500 hydraulic winch (approx. 500 kg pull) fits the TS-22, TS-30 and TS-30K, and a mechanical log lifter fits the HS-20H110 series. JSK-350 cone splitters mount on a mini excavator or loader, and the kit for the Jansen HBG-1500 earth auger turns it into a cone splitter. Carrier machines are in the excavators and loaders category.
Safety and use
Jansen splitters use two-hand controls, and most models are built to EN 609:2017. In the EU a splitting cross must not be used on splitters where the standard forbids it, so read the manual for your model. Wear gloves and safety boots, and connect an electric splitter with a cable of adequate cross-section. Before the first start fill the hydraulic oil (HLP46) and, on petrol models, the engine oil. Machines arrive in a crate or on a pallet, partly disassembled, for self-assembly.
Frequently asked questions
Which log splitter for home firewood?
For rounds up to 50 cm the horizontal HS-12L53 (petrol) or HS-12L53E (230 V) is enough. For thicker, knotty wood choose 20–22 tonnes.
Petrol or electric?
Petrol suits the forest and plots without power. Electric is quiet and needs no fuel, but requires a 230 V or 400 V socket depending on the model.
Can I connect a splitter to my tractor?
Yes. The TS-22 and TS-30 run from the PTO, while the TS-14L62 and TS-14L105 use tractor hydraulics with a pressure line and a pressure-free return.
What is a cone splitter for?
The cone screws into the log and tears it apart, which helps with big trunks and stumps. The JSK-350 needs a mini excavator with 15–60 l/min flow.
